So you want to coach a rec soccer team, eh? (You totally should!)

So you're thinking about maybe — just possibly — wanting to be a coach in the Pensacola Youth Soccer league.

We'll just come right out and say it. You absolutely should coach a team. Here are but a few reasons why:

  1. We never can have enough coaches. That's really the biggest limiting factor in this league. No coaches? No teams of kids.

  2. It is, above all else, fun. This is a rec league. We don't keep standings. We don't have playoffs. (Heck, some of us barely even keep score.) We're here to teach the kids about soccer and teamwork and maybe the odd life lesson here and there.

  3. How much fun is it? There are days in which you just won't stop laughing. We promise.

  4. You get a new name. "Coach." So if you were looking at expanding from "Pete" or "Susan" or whatever else it is you're called on a daily basis, now's your chance.

  5. You get a whistle. Who doesn't love whistles?

  6. You get your very own coaches jersey, which quickly will become the envy of the rest of your wardrobe.

Mostly, though, you should do it for the feeling you get when you see those dozen or so little faces looking up at you, waiting for you to lead them. Waiting for you to affirm that they just made a great pass. Or scored a great goal. Or stopped a great goal from scoring on them.

Rec soccer may be a little (at times) like herding cats. It's not always easy. But it is always fun. It's always rewarding. It's a way to give back just a little to your community each week. And it's a commitment of just a few hours a week for a few months of the year.

What if you've never coached before? Please don't let that stop you. We all had our first times. We’ll make sure you get what you need to get going. And you don’t have to have a child playing in the league. You just have to want to help!
